James Henry Hammond, an American attorney, politician, and planter, made significant strides in his career, serving as a United States representative, the 60th Governor of South Carolina, and a United States senator. Through his marriage, he acquired substantial property, ultimately owning over 22 square miles of land, multiple plantations and houses, and more than 300 enslaved Africans. Despite his achievements, however, Mr. Hammond committed heinous crimes by sexually assaulting his four nieces as teenagers, he was later elected to the United States Senate. He further propagated the reprehensible notion that "We do not think that whites should be slaves either by law or necessity. Our slaves are black, of another and inferior race.
